Multiple fire crews are tackling an industrial fire at Prices Garage in Pan this evening (Monday).
3 appliances are in attendance alongside a fire officer at the scene on Pan Lane, with thick black smoke being seen from across Newport.
Crews are using breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to control the blaze, with some explosions being heard from the scene in streets nearby.
The smoke appears to be rising from a container unit in a compound at the rear of the building.
UPDATE @ 19:43 – Firefighters from Newport and Cowes have laid hoses to nearby fire hydrants and are running them the short distance to the rear of the MOT garage.
Crews are tackling the blaze from both front and the rear of the container in order to prevent it spreading to nearby properties just 15 metres away.
UPDATE @ 19:55 – Firefighters are using an Ultra High Pressure Lance to pierce the metal of the container and cool the gases within, making it safer for them to open the container and control the fire inside.
Island Echo understands that old car parts have caught alight within the metal box.
UPDATE @ 20:19 – With the fire brought largely under control, crews are dampening down both inside the container and the ground surrounding it.
Several police units along with neighbourhood PCSO’s have arrived at the scene on Pan Lane and are conducting inquiries.
UPDATE @ 21:28 – Having made the scene safe and after checking for hotspots, fire crews are beginning to stand down from the incident, the cause of which remains so far unknown.
Thanks to the quick response by firefighters, no damage has been done to the garage itself, with the blaze contained to the storage container in the rear compound.

Why does the fire need the attendance of Armed Police
Where does it say that armed police were in attendance? It says that the local PCSO’s arrived at the scene and started making enquiries.
The officer in one of the pictures clearly has some kind of weapon strapped to his right leg. Can’t see his bacon sandwich holder though.
The Armed Response officers are also our Road traffic officers, and multi task in their role, jog on you troll
What you can see is a hook for hanging donuts on .
I’m glad no one was hurt. Luckily no one had to loose there jobs over it. Thank God our services on the island are quick. Well done to the fire service for bringing under control so quickly.
The officer is carrying a taser ….
Not a gun !!!!
He is carrying both, Taser is yellow
