Motorists are facing lengthy delays heading out of East Cowes this afternoon (Monday) as a result of an incident involving a VW Tiguan.
Police and paramedics are currently in attendance on Whippingham Road, near to the junction with Folly Lane. They were called out around 14:15.
It’s unclear what exactly has led to the emergency response and whether any other vehicles have been involved.
Traffic is backing up to Saunders Way roundabout and beyond, with smaller delays heading into the peninsular.
UPDATE @ 177:20 – It has been confirmed that a second vehicle was involved in the incident, which crashed into the rear of the Tiguan.
Island Echo understands that the VW driver pulled over to let a Police car pass.
A female passenger of the Tiguan has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment.
Some people just cannot drive…. get them off our roads…

Amazing how often this obvious pinch-point gets blocked. Single-road, single-carriageway access into one of the Ialsnd’s major residential and commercial centres just isn’t adequate.
No doubt there are some levelling up funds, or maybe an Island Deal, which could be applied, Mr Seely having worked his magic now with both Bozo and MisTrust.
It might be better to wait until more information is posted updating whether any other vehicles were involved and what the causes of the incident were. Too easy to form an opinion at this moment in time. Let’s hope no one was injured and needed medical attention.
Almost certain to be poor driving. VW’s rarely have faults, and although it could be medical issues the former is the most likely here now we have imported so many selfish nasty people to fill our towns and roads. Drugs, dealing and driving like idiots go hand in hand.

Allowing emergency vehicles to overtake on our narrow roads lead to tricky situations. It’s difficult, nay impossible, to ensure that all drivers are going to react in the same way, eg. some will be prepared to damage wheels by climbing kerbs other won’t, some will wait til there’s space to pull over, others will panic etc, etc.(I’ve obviously no idea what happened in this case)
Driving on the Island for many years, I reckon a good start to reducing accidents and incidents would be to revise our attitude to speed. Just as we did to drink-driving. Because cars can go so fast, why do we actually need to drive as if every second saved is vital and every moment’s delay an enraging offence? A sense of entitlement or self-importance, I wonder? Nowhere on the Island is more than 20 miles distant and most individual journies are not half that. The difference between travelling at 30mph rather than 70mph makes a difference of minutes. Is it unthinkable to consider a blanket 30mph ceiling? Just a thought…
