Police say they still don’t know the identity of a person whose body was found in the sea off the Isle of Wight some 12 months ago.
It was on 8th January 2023 that the cross-Channel Brittany Ferry ‘Cotentin’ reported to HM Coastguard that they had sighted an object in the water around 10 miles South East of Bembridge.
Bembridge RNLI lifeboat and Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter were tasked to the scene, locating a body in the water at around 18:20.
Over the past year, investigations have been taking place to ascertain the identity of the person and how they came to be in the water. However, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary say those investigations remain ongoing on the anniversary of the tragic discovery.
The death is still being treated as unexplained.

Could it be Richey Edwards of popular beat group The Manic Street Preachers?
Perhaps it would help if they could provide the public with a bit of detail: Gender / Size / Age band / Skin & hair colour etc.
They wont lell us it will be more paper work for them
There is a presumption in all police enquiries when a body is found that the family get told first which negates a considerable amount of appropriate interest from people who may have info but cannot be told anything by the police, simple DNA cannot define race and possible familial matches which can be crossed checked agianst many databases a number of which are in the public domain, this is not rocket science
They could be an illegal migrant.
You do know that seeking asylum is an important right, and not illegal?
Nonsense, If you land on the shores or jump into a dinghy and knowingly throw away the identification that got you through safe countries so you can claim free money and housing here like most of them do then they are illegal. If they hop on the eurostar which is much cheaper than a dinghy and keep their passports then that is a different matter entirely.
