Letter to the editor – 13th August 2022
“Dementia is one of the greatest health challenges facing society.
“Alzheimer’s Society estimate that by 2025, 1 million people will be living with dementia in the UK, and by 2040, dementia will cost the UK economy £94.1 billion annually. Of the top 10 causes of death worldwide, dementia is the only one that can’t be cured, stopped, or even slowed down. I would like to see this changed.
“Improving the lives of people affected by dementia is so important to me because I have been affected by my wife’s dementia. As her carer I know the struggle that carers face 24/7 in coping with the issues that dementia brings to all those who have to deal with it. You never know what’s around the corner and you could be next in having to cope with dementia. All politicians should make dealing with dementia a priority. Dementia is not political. It affects all of us whatever your political views are.
“With a new Prime Minister taking office next month, this is a rare and crucial moment for dementia in our local area. It is our chance to ensure it does not slip down the political agenda. Since the General Election in 2019, the Conservative Government has promised to deliver:
- A Dementia Moonshot, doubling dementia research funding to deliver breakthrough treatments
- A massive reform of the Social Care system, putting people in control of their care and reducing the amount they have to pay for it
- A ‘visionary’ 10-year plan for dementia, backed by proper funding and powerful partners, which could be transformational for 900,000 people with dementia in the UK.
“We must ensure these promises are kept by whoever becomes the next Prime Minister. I want to see Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss pledge to make dementia a priority in their Government, and help people in this area affected by dementia live more fulfilled and less fearful lives.”

The conservatives pledging to help the sick and needy? No chance, and even if they did, they will still find a way to screw people over. Stop voting conservative!
Absolutely well put my friend. This illness is so cruel. We don’t tend to think about it until it hits one of our own. His illness affects all of the family, not just the individual suffering from it. It absolutely ruins all of the hopes and plans a family might have had for both now and the future. Good luck with your campaign.
I doubt either will truly care for both will have all their loved ones, families and friends cared for privately.
We have paid into the NHS for our families but the world has arrived and overloaded the already fragile service
Yes an.important issue, but not the top priority at this moment in time.
Not a chance. The tories will not put up cash for any worthy causes, all they are interested in is lining their own pockets. They want to privatise the NHS, make us here on the island travel to the mainland for treatment, why do you think seely is not doing anything to help?
Good luck with that! If you think the Tory’s really give a monkeys for the likes of us!
Simply won’t happen. As this is something that, in the main, affects the elderly and no-one gives a damn about them. My mum waited nearly 12 months to be assessed and was finally seen this week. They didn’t do a proper memory test, they just prescribed her anti-depressants and said they will see her again in 6 months. Absolutely disgusting.
“The Conservative Government has promised to deliver”….
Which is utterly meaningless. The Tories have not made good any election promise they have ever made to the British people in the entirety of the 12 years they have been in power.
All they ever do is lie.
Wishful thinking I’m sorry to say
Sadly all parties are not fit to vote for. let alone individuals.
The Tories have had years to deal with masse immigration yet have done nothing. Yet Labour would likely be even worse.
The boom times are rapidly drawing to a close, and soon massive unemployment will hit, as thousands of businesses which rely on spare cash, go to the wall, then the knock on effect is their suppliers do likewise, and so on.
Nothing can be done by any party to stop this, as too many have been living a lifestyle they did not in honesty deserve.
Plumbers and builders, etc all demanding huge sums will once again be advertising ‘No job too small’
NHS hater Truss very recently stated that ‘We shouldn’t put the NHS on a pedestal’. So there’s the proof that if she gets into power, there will be even LESS money for OUR NHS, not more. There will be even fewer doctors, nurses, dentists, care workers, etc.
Tories are already showing signs of dementia themselves – they seem to have forgotten that 2019 election promise along with many others. Maybe they don’t even know when they are lying!
Agree with Nelson – I don’t trust Truss, she is just saying vote catcher words, shame we will be relying on members of the Conservative Party to vote the next PM in – end of he line for the UK as we knew it. Either the Cons are thick or they are going to vote her in then start a campaign to get rid of her after 6 months. The mysterious ways of Politics, and possible the Masons at work again at a cost to the UK. Can see why Scotland wants to be independent.
Neither will care as both will have private health care of the highest quality for all those they love.
Yet both will pretend to care until they are where they wish to be.
Dementia is just one of many illnesses affecting the human race, there are far too many illnesses to list that affect both young and old on a daily basis. All the politicians are interested in is “power” at any cost and the humble UK dweller and their health is the lowest priority as all the changes to the NHS service we used to know are creeping in via the back door. In less than 5 years time if you do not have access to a computer, or upmarket mobile phone the NHS will not be able to help you as everything is going digital including outsourcing of specialist appointments to companies via telephone or video link.
