A house in Sandown is set to be demolished and a block of 9 flats built in its place as planning permission is granted.
The house, 33 Carter Street, was a single 4-bedroom house which had reportedly fallen into a poor state of repair and was, as planning agents said, arguably uninhabitable.
Agents argued it was not suitable or economically viable to undertake a conversion or renovation due to the ‘maze of corridors, small rooms, poor insulation qualities, poor sound proofing, dilapidated roofs, damp proofing, rotten windows and poor decorations’ — so asked for the house to be demolished instead.
Now, the Isle of Wight Council’s planning department have approved F. W. Developments’ application for 9x 2-bed flats, each with its own parking or cycle storage space, over 2 and 3 storeys.
However, neighbours objected to the application, saying the new building would be bigger and bulkier, and cause a loss of privacy between the 2 properties.
The planning permission was granted but with 12 conditions, including obscured privacy glass on balconies, a soft landscape scheme has been submitted and approved to replace trees which would be removed due to the car parking measures and the work must be started in the next 3 years.

Sad to see more of the Islands quality houses of beauty to be destroyed.
Maybe not this one, but so many are then to be filled with state charity kept tenants, who soon outbreed their surroundings and then expect ‘the cauncil’ to house their numerous clones, whilst having paid in little or nothing themselves, but having claimed subsides rent, council tax, child allowance, and tax credits and ‘expect’ the cash to be their for their life style choice.
We would not fund them if the bought several horses, because they ‘want one’ so why their costly offspring, cut welfare to the bone, so only really ‘wanted’ children are created, not those for an easy lifestyle choice.
Great post – took the words right out of my mouth…
Slightly worrying that the flats will have either a parking space OR space to store a cycle.
That is a very big difference when you are adding 8 additional homes to an area that already has serious parking issues. Especially since that statement would be true even if only one flat had a parking space.
Historically, a large proportion of new flat owners do seem to come complete with one or even two cars.
I know there are some who will say that we should all ditch our cars but for some of us that just isn’t practical for work or family care reasons,
Mark if you hadn’t realised, pavements have had more attention recently than many of our roads. HMG must have had a ‘tip off’ that CV or similar was coming to impoverish the masses, so way less cars on the road, as EV’s will be out of reach of most working class, freeing up road space for ‘the better classes’ to drive on quite roads without the oinks getting in their way.
Same with the last few years huge amount of holiday parks growing in number here. Again the well to do were not happy that the tax credit plebs were sharing their exotic holiday location spots, and now, as CV impoverishes the working class for a generation, then they will have to holiday here, whilst the ‘better people’ fly in peace without tattooed, pierced chavs and their charity kept children ruining every photo shot of the worlds wonders.
THINK about it if only for amusement.
Mature trees removed for parking space?? ‘We know our priorities’, it seems. And who will ensure the new ones get off to a good start and don’t die off / get vandalised as saplings? The people who agree demolition of mature trees with their complex eco systems, not to mention the pleasure they give us – are they the same ones who nod along to David Attenborough as they watch his programmes?
