The Isle of Wight Council is reminding residents how Blue Badge decisions are reviewed after seeing an increase in enquiries from people whose applications have been unsuccessful.
For many people, a Blue Badge can play an important role in maintaining independence, helping them access healthcare appointments, shops, work and community activities.
The council acknowledges that it can be disappointing for applicants who do not receive the outcome they hoped for, particularly when they are living with long-term health conditions or disabilities.
However, Blue Badge applications must be assessed against national eligibility criteria set by central government, rather than local council policy.
Applicants who are unhappy with a decision can ask for it to be reviewed through the Blue Badge appeals process, which is designed to ensure applications are considered fairly and consistently.
Laura Gaudion, director of Adult Social Care and Housing Needs, has said:
“We understand that applying for a Blue Badge is often linked to the day-to-day challenges people face with their mobility and independence, so a refusal can be upsetting for those involved.
“Every application is considered on its own merits and assessed against national government guidance. While a person may have a diagnosed medical condition, decisions are based on how that condition affects their ability to undertake a journey and whether the evidence demonstrates they meet the eligibility criteria.
Article continues below this advertisement “For residents who disagree with a decision, there is an appeals process in place so applications can be reviewed. That process exists to make sure decisions are fair, transparent and consistent for everyone.”
The council says that while some residents submit formal complaints after completing the appeals process, complaints cannot be used to secure a different assessment outcome where the correct procedures have been followed.
Residents considering an application are being encouraged to familiarise themselves with the national eligibility criteria and the guidance available before applying.
