Firefighters are working with a local vet and landowners to rescue a horse that has become stuck in a ditch in Arreton this lunchtime (Friday).
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the animals distressing situation at around 12:20, with specialist appliances mobilised to assist in the rescue.
1 fire appliance from Newport, the animal rescue unit from Newport and a 4×4 Land Rover from Shanklin are all on scene in a field just off the cycle path at Horringford.
Efforts are underway to haul the large animal to safety with a number of plans being formulated – all under the guidance of a local vet and a tactical advisor from the fire service.
A tractor has been brought to the scene of the rescue, in case it is needed.
UPDATE @ 14:15 – Using animal rescue techniques, the crews have been able to manoeuvre the animal to safety.
The incident has now concluded.

Omg, well done to all involved in the horses rescue, hope the horse is ok?
This not the first time that these horse owners had a horse slip into the unprotected ditches. This happened a few years ago at the same location of property and owners. One begins to feel that these animals animals are not being cared for and neglected. All ditches and water course should be securely fences to to stop incidents like this occurring. The poor animal could have been injured or even killed. Plus who pays for our Fire Service attending. Hopefully not the local tax payer.
