The skipper of a small fishing vessel now faces a 7 hour wait to re-float his boat after running aground at the entrance to Ryde Harbour.
The 16ft boat was heading out of the heavily silted harbour shortly before 18:30 when the hull grounded out, resulting in the boat and it’s crew becoming firmly stuck.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team, who are understood to have been training nearby, responded to the situation by deploying 2 officers onto the sandbanks. However, before any further action could be taken the male was able to walk the short distance to the harbour wall across what was left of this evening’s tide – without becoming stuck in the mud.
High tide is not anticipated until 03:00 tomorrow morning. It’s at this point the vessel will be able to return to its mooring.
Mariners are to note that the boat has been put to anchor but is located in the middle of the harbour entrance.
HM Coastguard are now standing down from the incident.
