Firefighters are tackling a hedgerow fire that has spread to part of a field in East Cowes this afternoon (Saturday).
2 crews from Newport are in attendance off Beatrice Avenue and Saunders Way, not far from St Mildred‘s church.
The incident began at around 16:40 when local residents called 999 to alert Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue to the blaze.
One resident has told Island Echo that they could smell burning and could see ash flying around ahead of the arrival of firefighters.
The situation is under control with damping down now in progress.
UPDATE – Firefighters have been called back to the scene as the fire has re-ignited itself.
They are damping down the area further.
Fire crews were called to The London sheltered accommodation in Ryde earlier this afternoon when a laundry room fire broke out.
The situation involving an overheated appliance was quickly brought under control ahead of the arrival of fire crews from Ryde, Sandown and Newport.
Newport’s appliance was stood down en-route, soon being redeployed to East Cowes.

Wait until school for the lower elements ends. Best keep all crews on red alert, as the Island is torched ‘for a laugh’ as countless animals die a painful death, whilst those charity kept beings film it on the latest phone before going to the food bank as ‘in poverty’
What are you on about?
couldn’t have put it better myself
The more these events happen, the more braindead idiots come out, more idiots will be along soon…
