A memorial garden in Ryde has been officially reopened and rededicated this week following the completion of flood alleviation works.
The Royal George memorial garden at the Eastern end of The Strand has had a make over following works by Southern Water to help ease flooding on Simeon Street, Monkton Street and The Strand.
After burying a vast tank beneath the gardens, Southern Water offered to landscape the small memorial park. With the help of Clancy Docwra, the area has now been transformed.
Despite the torrential rain, dignitaries including the Island’s Lord Lieutenant Major General Martin White; High Sheriff Robin Courage MBE; Ryde Mayor Henry Adams and the Island’s MP Andrew Turner turned out to rededicate the gardens to the people of Ryde and in memory of those who perished when the Royal George capsized off Ryde in 1782.
The service was held by Revd Canon Graham Morris.
Mayor of Ryde, Cllr Henry Adams, paid special tribute to Southern Water in his opening address thanking the water company for its work to restore the gardens.
Southern Water Project manager, Peter Simmons said:
“We’re delighted to support the dedication of the Royal George memorial gardens following their renovation. Southern Water has worked closely with the local community to improve the gardens for the people of Ryde and visitors to the island.”
