A fundraiser has been set up for an elderly couple who had to evacuate their home in Ryde when flood water poured in yesterday morning (Wednesday), leaving their furniture floating around in a metre of brown detritus.
A video shared by Caitlin Hill shows how her nan had to wade through waist-deep water to leave her flat on The Strand. Caitlin’s grandad, who was also evacuated, suffers from Parkinson’s and dementia so found the situation very confusing.
Family members returned later in the day to see if the flood water had subsided, but the situation had actually become worse. They salvaged what they could, but so many things have been ruined – including sentimental and personal items.
Caitlin has said:
“They do have insurance but this will obviously take time to sort out, so any donations in the meantime will help to get them get through the next couple of weeks and hopefully help them realise that not all is lost, and things can be replaced.
“We want to help them navigate through the shock of the situation and want to say thank you for the kindness shown so far”.

A large number of residents in the Monktonmead area are coming to terms with the impact of the worst flood in a decade, with questions being asked of the Environment Agency as to why flood defences were not utilised.
It appears that the blocks that fill access voids in the flood defence wall around Simeon Street Recreation Ground were not put in place until it was too late. It’s known that at around 05:30 some of the blocks were put in place, but it’s understood contractors for the Environment Agency left before putting all of the blocks in place across all of the access points.
Island Echo is told by locals that the pumping station – which discharges water into Ryde Marina – also didn’t appear to be working.
EA staff probably called back to save Coffey’s fags from getting damp.

Seems like nothing works over here anymore despite the money that has been pumped into all these schemes.
Wouldn’t it be nice for an estate agent to come up with a temporary accommodation for them until their own place is sorted out , or the council , they seem to find properties for others when it suits.
Lazy no good dumb ……. what were they thinking!? They should all lose their jobs of let the people affected sort them all out!!
Who were the contractors, all they had to do was put a few planks in a gate, was it really that hard, make them pay.
Almost £1500 raised already. This lot will be getting a load of insurance money and this was only raised to tide them over until then. However, they won’t be giving it back you mugs. Think I will do one of these to get a new telly. Just need to think of a sob story.
