The demolition of a primary school in Freshwater has led to the uncovering of a blackboard displaying the subject matter of a class held some 27 years ago.
Workmen at All Saints Primary have been removing fixtures and fittings over the past few weeks, including a whiteboard that was placed over the top of this blackboard – photographed by West Wight Heritage Centre.
The centre’s members were having a tour around the school last week ahead of it being razed to the ground and snapped a photo of the blackboard, which dates back to July 1994.
It appears that students were taking part in a geography lesson about Monks Bay, with maths thrown in too with descriptions of the hour and minute hands.
Teachers Steve Densham and Veronica Reynolds signed the board – presumably knowing it was about to be covered up for years to come. Who would have thought that almost 3 decades later it would be still there, completely untouched.
All Saints Primary School is being demolished to make way for a new school building on the site. In the meantime, students will be moved to Yarmouth Primary School before students from the 2 combined schools move to the new All Saints.
Were you in that lesson? Perhaps you have your own memories of blackboards at school. Comment below!

That blackboard needs to be rescued and preserved and possibly displayed in the new school.
This is very cute! My name is in the top left-hand corner with Toni M’s, but we can’t work out why. Really loved that little school and all of the teachers there – It’s such a shame it’s being demolished as the original old stone school was very pretty!
Happy memories
