Handling raw chicken and then a cooked naan bread, risk of cross-contamination and poor paperwork filling has led to Chumma Kitchen in Ryde being handed a 1-star food hygiene rating.
Environmental Health inspectors have visited Chumma on Union Street a total of 3 times so far this year – a visit in January saw the premises handed a 3-star rating, whilst an inspection in June saw operations rated as 5-star.
Now, just 3 months after their 5-star inspection, Chumma Kitchen has been handed a lowly 1-star hygiene rating.
According to an official report, inspectors witnessed a staff member handling raw chicken before cooking a naan bread, handling it once it had been cooked and was ready to eat. Although a hand basin was present for use, the staff member didn’t use it. Furthermore, it took the inspector over 10 minutes to find suitable soap and paper towels to dry his own hands.
It was also discovered that a large amount of chicken pieces were being stored in a bag next to salad items on the same shelf of the fridge, posing a risk of cross-contamination.
High-risk food such as mutton curry was being kept on top of the cooker during service, at a temperature of just 50c. Another curry in a saucepan was used throughout service – despite inspectors being told it was cooling to go in the fridge – and was probed at 28.3c.
The temperature probe used for monitoring food temperatures was not being sanitised before/after each measurement – posing yet another potential risk of cross-contamination.
Other issues in the report include that the microwave was unclean with food debris and the fridge and freezer seals were both dirty and mouldy. The dry store room had old food debris on the floor and was wet and dirty.
Cif power and shine cleaning chemicals were being used to sanitise food contact surfaces and equipment, but the product does not meet recognised standards.
From a paperwork perspective, it was noted by inspectors that the business had not been completing diary pages and 4-weekly reviews since July. More seriously, they were unable to identify allergens on the menu. The Chumma team were also unable to demonstrate the source of all their products as the meat and fish items had been removed from their packaging and placed in unlabeled plastic bags.
It remains unclear why they have been visited 3 times in 9 months and why the score has fluctuated so much.
Chumma Kitchen has been approached for a statement but no response has been received
Food Hygiene Rating – Scores on the Doors
Compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures – 20
Compliance with structural requirements – 10
Confidence in management/control procedure s – 20

The biggest mystery is WHY do people assume that only foreign people can cook foreign foods?
They often come from lower hygiene lands, and now we have the internet any fool can follow a recipe and not end up ill or ripped off for a meal that cost pence for ingredients paying tens of pounds for.
Yet people plead poverty, it beats me.
It ahould be shut down
Amen to that.
nice, should be closed down for good with the rest of the dumps on the island
If you allow the third world’s arrivals to cook for you, what do you expect?
If you went to such people’s home land, no doubt you would get the runs, so as with many faults with these kinds it is NOT where they live which is the problem, but them themselves.
Why are so many filthy establishments allowed to trade.
The way things are going its cleaner and healthier to eat at home than eat out.
Everyone that’s commented has never set foot in this place, I have eaten there several times, one of my nippers worked there and I can honestly say they serve the most incredible food, best I’ve tasted in the UK. This is run by a good family and they just needed correct advice, many eating places get a fluctuating rating as we’ve all read in IE but we don’t hear about food poisonings or illness, so lets not get too hasty, Seaview yacht Club just got the same rating, but didn’t get any rascist slating Ive, and for the record I’m all for boat wan?ers being deported en-mass.
Home of the best Masala Dosa in the UK.
I to have attended the said establishment and have to agree most whole heartily with the comments above except my nipper lives in England
Many establishments on the Island are filthy
Here’s a few to mention
Cafe front of Sandown Pier, chefs and staff all stand outside the front
Smoking and Vaping and then go back into the kitchens.
Premier Inn are the same, it is not the establishments
IT’S THE DIRTY FILTHY WORKERS THEY EMPLOY
Covid did not teach anyone anything.
What happened to washing their hands afterwards!
Why do you think they do not wash their hands? They are only smoking and vaping so are not likely to have got dirty.
How do you know they don’t?
How do we know you don’t? There is no evidence to suggest that they don’t wash their hands so stop writing nonsense.
Watch them when they go back in and start serving customers
It starts and stops with owners
I have eaten there too and I found it a truly forgettable experience. Tiny portions of bland food. The chicken dish I had contained a microscopic amount of chicken. The restaurant is also gloomy and smells damp. I would not go back.
Why does IW Council when scoring establishments also look at the
Safety elements ??
For example McDonalds Ryde is an ACCIDENT WAITING TOO HAPPEN
due to the Vehicles going into the car park, vehicles tail back and due to this
vehicles not wanting to eat JUNK food have to overtake parked Traffic
with oncoming traffic.
Also take the 2 businesses in Shanklin Yummy Tummy’s & Domino Pizza
their moron drivers park on both side of a 1 way street and also on Pavements
DOES SAFETY NOT EXIST ON THE ISLAND ??!!!!!
Because this scoring scheme is a national one, based purely on food hygiene. That’s why they are called hygiene ratings.
If the UNSAFE BUSINESSES were closed down due to being UNSAFE
less Businesses to rate!
I would close McDonalds in Ryde down due to be an HEALTH AND SAFTEY HAZARD
also the businesses in Regent Street who are UNSAFE
Most of the pubs are the same they just don’t get visited enough
see the usual bigoted racists have nothing better to do
If they are that bad they should be closed down until a further inspection proves they have remedied all issues and then they should be inspected regularly in the future
Another entry in my black book for yet another eatery that doesn’t give a monkey’s about it’s customers. Ignorance is no excuse. Personally, I don’t care where you come from, or what colour you are, but I do care that your recklessness with food could kill a vulnerable person with underlying health issues.
Probably same staff as Sam’s down the road. They’re dirty too and don’t care that young and elderly are eating their food.
Filthy I’m still really devastated that they did that, should check them again as well 🙁
