The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar – from Whitwell to Bembridge – as a result of 36mm of rainfall overnight.
It’s said that the Eastern Yar is high and rising, with water levels set to become noticeably high at Alverstone, rising near to the top of the river bank.
Some minor out of bank flooding may also occur in fields at Langbridge. However, access issues to Horringford or impacts at Sandown are not expected.
Property flooding is also not expected.
At Alverstone, the river won’t peak until at least 13:00 this afternoon, by which time levels will be very high, right to the top of the river bank, near the main road bridge.
Drier weather this afternoon and tomorrow will give water levels a chance to recover.
Property owners are being urged to ensure that pumps used to protect gardens and property can operate.
Having seen the state of most of the drains perhaps Island roads could get out a little earlier than October and clear them .That I ‘m sure would help a great deal.
Yes council clean the drains and don’t say you did it when it floods, like you did in binstead a year ago never see roads swept or drains cleaned anymore yet we pay for it

I believe they only have two drain cleaning machines now, down from six a couple of years ago,
So instead of planned maintenance it’s down to crisis management.
