The Cowes Floating Bridge is once again out of action today (Monday) in order to complete planned works which have overrun from last month.
The floating bridge service was suspended last Wednesday when an electrical fault hit, with operations only beginning again 3 days later on Saturday afternoon.
Now, the Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that the service has been halted again in order to complete works which were begun back on 22nd September.
Whilst most of the planned works were completed, it was not possible to complete the replacement of the worn noise mitigating ‘shoe’ on the western prow.
As the new ‘shoe’ is required to minimise noise from emanating from the prow impacting the slipway, it is essential that this work is completed at the earliest opportunity, says the local authority.
As a result, the floating bridge is out of action between now and 14:00 this afternoon.
The usual foot passenger launch is in service.
Sorry, but ‘planned’ and ‘overrun’ do not go together in the same sentence. Usual IOW Council inability more like the correct term here.

Further evidence that we need a permanent fixed link over (or under) the river Medina linking both sides of Cowes as close as geographically possible. However between the dinosaurs at County Hall and the Nimby brigade, there’s more chance of Vladimir Putin winning this year’s Nobel Peace prize.
A nice swing bridge or lifting bridge would be the ideal solution.
It’s not too busy a river, so the inconvenience of waiting for the bridge to open would be minimal to water-borne craft. If the Council needs an example, just pop along to Poole waterfront and you will see lifting bridges in action almost hourly.
And whilst they do that lets have one across to our beautiful mainland as well
Haha… That’s a step too far. It’s way beyond the realms of fantasy. They can’t even structure a ‘working’ transport infrastructure for the Island. What chance have we got of ever considering a permanent mainland link?
this council wont listen to the rate payers they wont put this on the junk heap , the I.O.W council have something to hide and will not disclose there reasons for this continued failure,the Council just hope the rate payers will continue to dip in their pockets .
Thank the Lord that this work couldn’t be done whilst the thing was out of action with the electrical fault.
It would be a PR disaster if that were to happen – the public may just start to believe that the Council had at least a small level of competence in dealing with this failed floating bridge.
It’s about time they built a bridge.

The folk that run the launch must be millionaires by now!! I bet they never thought their little launch would turn into such a profitable business. Hats off to them for always being there and providing such a reliable service and I’m glad a long IW established business has done so well out of this debacle. Long term though this cannot carry on. FB is an embarrassing disgrace.
