Torrential downpours that have swept across the Isle of Wight have led to flash flooding in Cowes, East Cowes and Ryde this evening (Thursday).
An intense thunderstorm has brought a heavy band of rain to the local area, with significant rainfall witnessed in northern parts of the Island.
Parts of High Street and Victoria Road in Cowes are underwater, which means Route 1 buses are on diversion.
A boat has capsized just outside Cowes Harbour.
On the other side of the River Medina, flooding has been seen on Clarence Road in East Cowes.
In Newport, Sainsbury’s supermarket has been evacuated due to the partial collapse of the ceiling and flooding of the aisles.
Roads connecting Ryde to Newport are also said to be flooded in areas.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service says it is receiving a high volume of calls due to flooding across the Isle of Wight.
The advice is to only call 999 if there is an immediate risk to life. If not, contact Floodline on 0345 988 1188 for advice.
Earlier today IW Met Service issued a yellow weather warning for exactly the weather experienced this evening.
Chief Forecaster Jamie Russell predicted around 50mm of rainfall.

if the council ensured that the storm drains were cleaned regularly and didn’t approve housbuilding on flood plains, then the local flooding wouldn’t happen.

East cowes would experience flooding every year in the town we always kept welling boots by door.
I doesn’t sound as though anyone remembers the severe flooding in the 60’s I think.
