Freshwater’s Co-Operative store on Afton Road will close in just a matter of days, it has been confirmed.
The West Wight supermarket, which first opened in 2015, has been expected to close for months following the news that it is being taken over by Tesco.
It was originally planned that the store would close in September, but this date has been continuously pushed back.
A notice in the store now confirms that the Southern Co-Operative will cease to trade from Afton Road at 16:00 on Sunday 6th February.
Despite the Freshwater store being ‘successful’, Southern Co-op has previously said that the sale will allow it to focus on its convenience stores, including the shop in Avenue Road, which will continue to serve customers in their communities.
A date for the opening of Tesco – which will be the 5th Tesco store on the Isle of Wight – is yet to be announced but it is thought Tesco Freshwater will open on or around the week commencing 21st March.
It’s known that the refreshed store will be open from 07:00-22:00 Monday to Saturday and 10:00-16:00 on Sunday. It will include a bakery and a Post Office, with an external cashpoint retained and electric vehicle charging points too.
Shoppers will be pleased to hear that Tesco’s Click + Collect will be made available to those in the West Wight. 3 parking bays will be dedicated to the service, with customers scanning a QR code upon arrival to call for their shopping to be brought out to the car.<
About time, great news for residents, can now save a third on food costs and put towards extra utility bills etc.
So how long will Freshwater be without a Post Office?
Yarmouth Post Office is only open Monday – Friday 9 – 12/12.30
Is Totland Post Office not open daily though?
We could do with a Tesco’s in Shanklin to give the Co op some competition
