Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is in attendance at Smallbrook Stadium on the outskirts of Ryde this afternoon (Wednesday), where firefighters are dowsing a bonfire.
1 appliance was mobilised to ground to the rear of the speedway clubhouse, near the remote control car racing track, at just before 14:03.
Firefighters from Ryde are working to extinguish the bonfire, which is said to have become out of control. A hose reel is in operation.
UPDATE @ 14:55 – The fire service has now stood down from the incident. It’s said that fire had spread to a hedgerow.
If you see a fire in the countryside, contact the fire service immediately on 999. Do not attempt to tackle fires that cannot be put out with a bucket of water.
Remember, do not discard cigarettes or other smoking materials in the countryside. It is also important to clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Always take extra care if using a barbecue and only light fires or BBQs in designated areas. Never leave a campfire or BBQ unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.

So who was the idiot who lit the bonfire??
Hi was a controlled bonfire, it was not put out , don’t you just love a story
Not very controlled if the Fire Service was called to put it out was it?
The region is still under drought conditions, we still have a hosepipe ban and the ground is bone dry. Lighting a bonfire in these conditions is utterly stupid and irresponsible.
If you don’t read the news you are uninformed if you do read the news you are misinformed. It was a controlled fire. They did get one thing correct though. Almost…. it was near remote control car track….. it was at remote control car track.
Really! Who was the idiot that told somebody to light it ???
Oh that’s what a “controlled” bonfire is supposed to look like in a period of drought… There should be NO bonfire in a drought situation, whatever pillock decided it might be a good idea needs charging for the call out.
