A fire in amongst undergrowth at the side of the carriageway has closed Long Lane near Downend this morning (Friday).
2 pumping appliances from Newport are in attendance around halfway along the busy stretch of road between Robin Hill roundabout and Staplers Road.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was called out at around 10:40 when smoke was seen coming from amongst the trees.
2 hose reel jets are being utilised to extinguish the fire and damp down the area.
Southern Vectis Route 8 buses outbound from Newport are diverting via Whiterails Road and Briddlesford Road, with motorists urged to follow the same diversion. Blacklands Lane is also open for light traffic.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
It’s been a busy morning for Newport’s wholetime crew who were called out to a car fire earlier this morning.
1 appliance was mobilised to Lonsdale Avenue on the Parkhurst estate shortly after 10:00.
