Fire crews are tackling a large fire in Binstead this afternoon (Thursday) leading to significant traffic delays in the area.
Firefighters from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene off Binstead Road, near to The Fleming Arms, at around 16:00.
Island Echo understands that a fire has broken out near a shed and garage block, causing smoke to billow into the sky.
2 fire appliances from Ryde are on scene and firefighters, kitted up in breathing apparatus, are using hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze which is now just smouldering.
Water is being extracted from nearby hydrants resulting in part of the road being blocked.
As a result, the main Newport to Ryde road is under give and take with traffic in the area building. 2 kind-hearted members of the public are directing traffic whilst the incident is brought under control.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being.
It is believed that no casualties have been involved in the incident, but an outbuilding has been badly damaged.
UPDATE @ 16:55 – The blaze has been brought under control with firefighters now dampening down the charred remains.

Great that the incident is sorted without injuries……would appreciate it if the diverted traffic didn’t speed along Newnham Road, Verwood Drive and Binstead Lodge Road just to get around the closed road, 30 max – it’s a residential area not a race track Muppets!!
Were there no police at a major road obstruction to direct traffic – used to be something they did back in the day.
