Fire crews are tackling an incident in Porchfield this afternoon (Sunday) after a bonfire spread to a nearby field as temperatures continue to soar.
1 appliance from Newport, as well as a a water carrier from Freshwater, were mobilised to the scene on Colemans Lane at around 14:47.
The incident is still ongoing with those crews on scene working to dampen the area affected by the flames.
UPDATE @ 16:45 – The fire has been extinguished with both crews standing down.
If you see a fire in the countryside, contact the fire service immediately on 999. Do not attempt to tackle fires that cannot be put out with a bucket of water.
Remember, do not discard cigarettes or other smoking materials in the countryside. It is also important to clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Always take extra care if using a barbecue and only light fires or BBQs in designated areas. Never leave a campfire or BBQ unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.

What total stupid idiots have a garden fire in a heatwave. Make them pay for the fire service time and expenses.
Common sense seems to have bypassed some people.
Why are people having bonfires when conditions are so dry? Maybe it’s similar to the mentality of some people who think it’s okay to leave disposable BBQ’s in woodland without pouring water on them first!
Or deliberately set fires on riverbanks.
Society has certainly changed – and it’s not for the better!
Very warm weather and idiots are burning stuff, more idiots will be along soon…
Stupid idiots, should be made to pay for the attendance of the fire brigade.
