The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tackling a field fire near Totland this evening (Sunday).
Crews from Freshwater, Newport, Yarmouth and Ventnor are reported to be on the scene in the Highdown area of Totland, off Alum Bay Old Road.
At least 3 pumping appliances and 2 water carriers are understood to be on the scene after the alarm was raised sometime around 17:50.
UPDATE @ 18:30 – It has been confirmed that the fire is spread over an area measuring 30m x 5m.
Although large, the fire is being contained by crews and there is no current threat to property or life.
UPDATE @ 19:15 – A fallen electrical cable is thought to have caused this evening’s fire.
Power has been lost in the Alum Bay area as a result of the network issue.
Crews are now starting to stand down from the incident having damped down the area.
UPDATE @ 22:15 – It has been confirmed that crews initially used ground monitors to contain and stop the spread of fire while the electricity board were called to isolate the power. The fire was then extinguished using main jets.
Police are also said to have attended the incident to close the road.
