The Falconry Experience, formally known as Haven Falconry, has announced it is moving from the Isle of Wight Steam Railway in Havenstreet to Butterfly World in Wootton.
The attraction has been located at Havenstreet since July 2016 but has faced ongoing financial difficulties as the land lease approaches its end. The seasonal closures of the railway greatly impact their income, leaving them unable to sustain the centre, despite their year-round expenses.
Following a severe financial setback in January, discussions about closing the centre and relocating their beloved birds revealed that many could end up in rescue centres, depriving them of their freedom and natural behaviours. Determined to avoid this heartbreaking outcome, the team has opted to remain open on a day-to-day basis, whilst searching for new premises.
Now, it has been revealed that The Falconry Experience is preparing to relocate to Butterfly World Medina Garden Centre over the Winter, bringing fresh opportunities and a new environment to enhance its offerings.
This initiative promises to invigorate their activities, attract more visitors and provide improved facilities for both the birds and their enthusiasts. Supporters can look forward to an exciting new chapter filled with engaging experiences and opportunities to connect with these magnificent birds of prey in a vibrant setting.
The positive development of the move to Butterfly World offers a glimmer of hope for the falconry centre, but financial constraints still hinder the ability to move. With the current team operating primarily on a day-to-day basis to support the birds, they are seeking urgent assistance to fund the relocation process.
Without the necessary resources to transport and rebuild enclosures for their beloved free-flying birds of prey, the future of the centre hangs in the balance. Community support is crucial in helping ensure the well-being of the birds and the continuation of their vital conservation and educational efforts.
Relocating involves significant logistical challenges, including the disassembly and reconstruction of 30 enclosures and outbuildings, many of which are not suitable for transport. The centre urgently requires manpower, trucks, lorries, and materials like wood, gravel, and sand, skips all of which come with a substantial financial burden that the team currently lacks. Community support in terms of volunteer labour, equipment, or donations of materials would be invaluable in ensuring a successful move and maintaining the well-being of their birds.
A crowdfunding campaign has been launched with a target of £10,000 – with £600 raised to date.

A spokesperson for Butterfly World has said:
“Discussions are currently taking place between both parties to enable us to work together for future events such as Easter and Halloween and also by offering joint entry tickets into both animal attractions.
“Butterfly World is a popular destination for families, coach parties and also educational experiences for schools across the island and mainland. Working together with The Falconry Experience will make 2025 a very exciting year for us all and will hopefully confirm our position as one of the island’s most enjoyable attractions”.
