An elderly man was hit by a van whilst he was walking across a busy pedestrian crossing in Newport this morning (Monday).
A grey Ford Transit Connect van collided with the man in his 80’s on the crossing between Furrlongs and KFC at around 11:27 after he allegedly drove through a red light.
The driver of the van did stop after hitting the elderly male to see if the gentleman was okay, however, left in the van without reporting the incident to the emergency services.
Police and Paramedics were mobilised to the location where they treated the male for minor injuries. He did not require Hospital treatment.
Official Police enquiries are still ongoing and anyone with information or dash-cam / CCTV footage, is asked to call 101 quoting reference 44220255667.

I see vehicles going through Amber and red lights every time I go out. Some drivers don’t seem to realise that Amber means stop if safe.no wo der there are incidents like this.
There are now so many traffic lights on ever roadworks, whether manned or sat for days not being worked upon that I guess drivers who are on the road all day take risks more and more.
NOT excusing such dangerous practises but saying I know how the drivers get sick and tired of new rules making every road work have to have traffic lights now.
So sometimes, things that are supposed to make life safer work the opposite.
Another idiot will be along soon….
What a scum bag! The poor gentleman hope he’s ok?
More bad driving on the IW
With all the money spent on apparent upgrade of the lights around copings bridge it should of included cameras on them
Yes – lets increase the spying on the populace more
Why the hell are so many drivers in such a rush on this island? Slow down before someone is killed.
The amount of drivers who go through the lights these days is phenomenal, about time they put anpr cameras on the island
It will come in time, why pay someone to sit in a van with anpr camera when there are traffic lights everywhere they can bung them on. Bring it on I say. Anything to keep people safe.
Being a pedestrian as don’t drive, I will add that I can’t understand why no matter how old the driver is they all think they are king of the road. Being in and around Newport yes there are LOTS of lights because it is a busy town with LOTS of pedestrians.. but speeding around corners, built up areas where there are children is why there are speed limits and not many drives seem to notice this.. Safer for us walkers up in London.. the amount of times I curse, ffs slow down you tit. One day it will be someone in your family…SLOW DOWN.. nuff said
