An Isle of Wight man who was spotted swerving all over the road whilst driving from Newport to Ryde – without his vehicle’s headlights on – has been given a lengthy driving ban and fined almost £500.
Jesse Green, 27, of Newport Road at Tapnell appeared before Magistrates this morning (Friday) charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis, to which he pleaded guilty.
During the hearing details of Green’s offending on 26th March this year were detailed.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that a member of the public had spotted a vehicle travelling between the towns of Newport and Ryde without any headlights on, prompting a call to Police. The caller said that the vehicle – a black Mitsubishi pickup – was swerving across the road.
Officers eventually located the vehicle on Queen’s Road in Ryde, noting that it still didn’t have any headlights on.
A roadside breath test was conducted which returned a non-evidential reading of 93 – the limit being 35. However, when Green was taken to Newport Police Station he failed – on 8 attempts – to provide an evidential reading.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said that his client – a self-employed fisherman – had been on a rare night out during leave from his job in the Netherlands. He said that Green decided to drive shortly after watching football at a local pub.
Mr Vincent said that Green had genuine difficulties with the intoximeter at the Police station, highlighting that prior to this he had been cooperative with Police.
Green has previous convictions for assaulting Police.
Magistrates initially asked for a pre-sentence report to be compiled by Probation, but less than an hour later Green was back in the courtroom as Probation deemed any community order unworkable due to the 27-year-old’s work abroad.
Instead, Magistrates proceeded to sentencing, handing Jesse Green a 30-month driving disqualification, a £461 fine and ordering him to pay £85 costs with a £184 surcharge – a total of £730.

what a island drunk or drug driver never
Scum like this could have killed any of us.
Not the brightest of things to do……
He should be jailed ,theres no excuse for drink driving & if it means he lost his job then ,its a case of oh dear what a pity never mind !!!!
Drink and or drug driving should be automatic 10 year ban, plus fines starting at no less than £1,000.00… If this was law, and advertised I am sure it would cut down on a lot of these drink and drunk drivers, which in turn could save lives, and accidents..
Quite an expensive lesson, he would have saved £680+ if he’d got a taxi instead.
This dead head should never be allowed a licence again. So many of these cretins on the road now. They care not for their own safety so why would they give a fig about anyone else’s.
