A 37-year-old who was involved in a crash on a narrow stretch of road in Newport was found to have drugs in his system at the time of the collision, Magistrates heard this week.
Jamie Williams, of Manor Crescent in Newport, pleaded guilty to 1 count of drug driving (cannabis) when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that on the evening of 2nd April 2022, Williams was involved in a collision with another car whilst driving his Seat Leon on Marvel Lane.
The 37-year-old was asked to complete a roadside drugs wipe, which indicated a positive result, with a blood test later revealing that he had 4.3ug of THC (cannabis) in his blood – over 2x the legal limit.
In defence, Jim Osborne said that his client was disappointed in himself and that he deeply regretted driving that day.
This was Williams’ 2nd driving offence in 10 years meaning he was eligible for a longer driving disqualification as a result.
Magistrates disqualified him from driving for 3 years and ordered him to pay a fine of £323, £85 costs and a £34 surcharge fee.
