A Newport woman admitted having smoked cannabis before being stopped by Police as she drove through a residential estate in Newport, with a young child as her passenger.
49-year-old Abbey Grant, of Trattles Court, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 17th December and pleaded guilty to a single offence of drug driving (cannabis).
The court heard that on 29th May this year, at 13:35 in the afternoon, Grant was stopped by Police as she drove her Hyundai through the Bluebell Meadows estate in Newport. Officers noted her eyes were ‘glassed over’ and she appeared nervous.
Shockingly, officers found a young child in the car.
Grant made admissions that she had smoked cannabis that morning, with bloods taken whilst in Police custody later returning a reading of 5.5u/g – the prescribed limit being 2.0u/g.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said that his client was of previous good character having never been before the court. He explained to the bench that Grant smoked cannabis to ease her pain in relation to fibromialga, but since the incident in May, she has not consumed any drugs.
Mr Vincent said that the 49-year-old decided to drive that day due to a family emergency. He made a point of saying that there was no evidence of unacceptable driving and that when stopped again later in the year, all tests came back clear.
Magistrates handed Abbey Grant a 14-month driving ban, fined her £120 and ordered her to pay £85 costs with a £48 surcharge.
Such a lenient sentence.
“Bang up all druggies”, too many excuses about
