A Brading woman who crashed her car whilst drunk has been handed a lengthy driving ban and a community order – all thanks to her Dad calling the Police.
Danielle Mulkhern, 31, of Lower Furlongs, pleaded guilty to 1 count of drink driving and 1 count of failing to stop after a road accident when she appeared in front of Magistrates on Friday.
Leah Dillon, prosecuting, told the court that at around 23:00 on 29th September Police received a report that someone had driven in front of a coach on Shanklin Road with no lights on and had caused some damage to the vehicle whilst doing so.
At around 23:30, Police attended a scene outside The Coop on Landguard Road, Shanklin where Mulkern had left her car abandoned. When Police attended the scene they found a handbag but not the driver of the car – a Kia Rio.
Shortly after this Police received a call from Mulkhern’s father who said that his daughter had been involved in an incident and that she had been drinking. Officers attended the address and conducted a breath test in which Mulkhern blew 82 – more than double the legal limit of 35.
Oscar Vincent, for Mulkhern, said that the crash came at an extremely difficult time and that the 31-year-old was sorry for her actions and that she had stopped drinking since the incident in September.
Mulkhern was handed a 20 month driving ban. Magistrates also ordered her to complete a 12-month community order with 120 hours of unpaid work attached and 25 rehabilitation days. She was also told to pay £114 surcharge fee and £85 costs.

They should re-name the Island – P*ss Head Island.

Still a poor outcome of a ban 20 months she could if killed somebody
Well done to this stupid woman’s Dad. Why do people drink and drive. It selfish and extremely stupid.
Finally a parent with some responsibility, albeit a little late but nonetheless…..
Likely ONLY did so as knew the left handbag contained info to owner as likely did the car, and the sentence would have been worse. Honour amongst thieves and all that…
Why can’t the law get a bit more imaginative with sentencing? Fines need to be shockingly high, and the money grabbed back by forced asset collection or from benefits/wages. They might think twice about offending again. Hit them where it truly hurts, in the pocket. Bans should be increased in length, starting at 5 years & £5000 and mandatory custody for just over the limit. I’m sick and tired of reading the same old light sentences handed out to offenders such as this.
What sort of coop was it? One for chickens?
