23-year-old Oliver Short has escaped going to prison, but has been banned from driving for 12 months, after he caused serious injury to a fellow motorcyclist in a crash at Blackgang last Summer.
It was on 17th July 2024 that Police were called to the A3055 Blackgang Road when 2 motorcycles collided, with 1 rider sustaining significant injuries that led to them being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Appearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 5th November, Short, of Tayberry Close in Newport, pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to causing serious injury by careless driving and driving without insurance.
During that hearing, Lauren McConnell, prosecuting, detailed to the court how the 2 vehicles came together. Short was travelling uphill and turned right into the Viewpoint Car Park, directly into the path of an oncoming motorcycle travelling away from Niton, being ridden by Mr Derek Bruinsma.
Magistrates heard that Mr Bruinsma sustained a broken pelvis and fibular in the smash, as well as a large flesh wound. He spent more than 30 days in hospital, followed by a week in a care home for rehabilitation. He has still not fully recovered.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said that his client accepted that there was a momentary lapse in concentration, that was careless. Mr Vincent explained that Short was conducting a ‘lifesaver check’ over his shoulder just before making his manoeuvre.
At a sentencing hearing on 17th January, Short was handed a 12-month driving ban and a 12-month community order, including 200 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay a £720 fine, £85 costs and a £114 surcharge.
Island Echo requested a copy of the dashcam footage played in court, but the request was refused.
There are too many idiots on our roads.
If plod stood with an handheld speed camera
from Niton to the Blackgang Car park and along the
Military Road, they would catch numerous idiot
Motorcyclists who break the speed limit on a daily
basis.
Are all Motorcyclists Numpty’s, or is it part of the
Motorcyclist test!
Blah blah blah blah. Blah blah
Were you born stupid, or did it come with time.
Muppet!
You’re a pathetic old man who clearly eats a bowl of stupid every morning
So, how does the injured party get compensation for his injuries and the damage to his motor bike if the one causing the accident had no insurance?
The family should be forced to pay from life insurance cover etc.
Family? Should? Jesus, you’re attaining whole new levels of stupidity now
