An adventurous dog named Archie has been rescued by HM Coastguard and Freshwater Independent Lifeboat this lunchtime (Tuesday).
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were mobilised to the Watcombe Bay area in the West Wight at around 11:30 following reports that a dog had become stuck.
Archie, who is just 4-years-old, had wandered off and had managed to get into a right predicament. He slipped under a fence and down the cliff at Fort Redoubt and into Watcombe Bay, resulting in a rescue operation being launched.
Freshwater Independent Lifeboat’s D-Class lifeboat was tasked to assist with the operation and after beaching the craft, the crew were able to rescue the dog from his perched position on a ledge. He was soon transferred onto the lifeboat.
The canine was taken to Freshwater Independent Lifeboat station and reunited with his thankful owner, Mr Knoakes from Norwich. Amazingly, Archie has escaped with no sign of trauma from his adventure.
Kai Hall, Lifeboat Helm said:
“Archie was very well behaved on the way back. It’s a concern for crew when dealing with animals, they are often scared and can be unpredictable.”
Josh MacGregor, Lifeboat Crew member added:
“The crews were delayed by several minutes in Avenue Road in Freshwater Village. A lorry had blocked the road, and cars couldn’t move. A number of crew members, who were passengers ended up taking to foot and running to the boathouse.”
