A dog has been successfully rescued from the cliffs at Alum Bay after slipping its collar having become spooked by fireworks.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from The Needles and Ventnor were initially tasked at 21:45 last night (Thursday) to reports of a person and a dog trapped at the bottom of the cliff.
Once on scene, HM Coastguard was able to establish that the dog’s owner had already managed to get back to safety – but man’s best friend was still unaccounted for.
Search teams were deployed to locate the dog with para illuminates discharged to assist in lighting the area. As a result, the dog was soon located on the cliff face and a cliff technician was lowered down to rescue the animal.
The situation arose when the dog – which was on a lead – managed to slip its collar. It had been spooked by the weekly fireworks at The Needles Landmark Attraction.
HM Coastguard is reminding dog owners to always be cautious around cliffs and keep your dog on a lead. Earlier this week Coastguards from Bembridge and Ventnor were involved in the rescue of a spaniel at Culver Down.
The incident was concluded by 00:45.

Lets hope all the social media “dog experts” read the dog WAS on a lead.
Well done to the Coast Guard rescue teams for a good result.
6 month old pup,night,cliff, fireworks, noisy crowds=stupid.
Exactly. Dogs have extremely sensitive ears and loud bangs and sounds are very alarming for many of them. Don’t know why the perfectly sensible comment pointing that out was removed.
Brilliant idea take your dog for a walk along a cliff while fireworks are being set off
Maybe they were visitors and didn’t know about the fireworks.
Get real
Bloody dogs, a constant drain on our resources, dirty, messy, noisy and that’s just the owners!
Why walk your dog close to a cliff edge in the dark?
I used to go up on the hill to watch the fireworks with my Black labrador but she was not at all bothered by the lad bangs and flashes whereas her daughter whom I still have would be absolutely petrified so would never take her
Ridiculous use of public services – no wonder our community taxes continue to rise.
A dog is an animal and whilst I wouldn’t want any harm to come to them – humans are still priority!
In the Thomas Hardy novel – ‘Far from the Maddening Crowd’, a whole herd of sheep go over the cliff – chased by an untrained sheepdog – a disaster for the hero of the novel, but no emergency services appeared.
