Over 1 in 10 Isle of Wight adults have seen their marriage end in divorce, a new study has revealed.
New statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that 10.76% of over 16s have divorced from their husband or wife.
The rate is above the national average, while 38.5% of Isle of Wight residents have never married and 42.4% are currently married or in a civil partnership.
A leading family law expert believes those people who are divorcing are completing the process in a more amicable way than in previous years.
This has been assisted by changes to legislation, including the introduction of no-fault divorce, and the opportunity for a couple to use one lawyer in the divorce process rather than the traditional route of each having legal representation.
Philip Barnsley, Head of Family at leading law firm Higgs LLP, has said:
“The general trend around divorces is for them to be on the rise, and that is usually a pattern which emerges in a challenging economic climate.
“What we are also seeing in increasing numbers is that those people who are getting divorced are keen to do so in a more amicable way.
Article continues below this advertisement “There are a number of reasons for that. People are getting married at an older age and are consequently getting divorced when they are older.
“It has completely removed the need for blame to be apportioned for adultery or other unreasonable behaviour when a relationship breaks down and separating couples have responded well to these changes.”
Philip believes the changes in approach to divorce are being reflected in new methods being offered by law firms.

No, it really wasn’t.
I am fully behind couples living together for a period of time seeing if they are compatible. The old saying comes to mind ‘marry in haste,repent at leisure. My wife and me lived together for 2 years then got married back in 1977. Yes we had our differences . Yes we went through hard times. But here we are 46 years married this year and living together 48 years. You have to put any arguments,differences behind you and start each day afresh. Learn by mistakes and appreciate each other. She does the meals and I do the washing and drying up and putting away. We do the shopping together. As I’ve said to people – if I wanted a single life I would never had married.
But the world doesn’t move to the beat of just one drum.
What may be right for you may not be right for some.
These figures really do not surprise me, I lived on the island for 10 years , it is pretty and a beautiful island , I left in June 2021 and moved back to the mainland , I was cautious doing this but having left the island I soon realised what a horrible place the island really is, not only low unemployment and alot of crime but I soon realised after leaving and reflecting that there is alot of jealousy in success, a lot of back stabbing between so called friends and I would never return to live there, I read the news on IE most days and from an outside point of view the place really does appear to be riddled with crime.
And what has that got to do with getting a divorce? Did I miss something?
Because crime is so much lower on the mainland isn’t it. Get a grip!
In most categories – proportionately yes! The island has a much higher rate of ‘petty’ crime, sexual offences and car crime.

I suppose a lot of people on the island don’t get married because you can’t legally marry your sister, brother, mother or father.
So many persons have kids with one partner then another and in some cases another.
Years later children are breeding with their half brothers and sisters etc.
