Local dignitaries gathered at Barton Manor Estate this morning (Monday) to witness the swearing-in of the new High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight.
Those present at the invitation-only event in East Cowes included Lord Lieutenant Susie Sheldon, Island MP Bob Seely and Chairman of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Claire Critchison.
The role of the High Sheriff is a non-political and unpaid role and can only be bestowed upon someone who owns property on the Island. The incumbent will attend Royal visits to the Island, act as the returning officer for parliamentary elections and is responsible for the proclamation of the accession of a new sovereign.
Isle of Wight Magistrate Keith Jones addressed the room before handing over to the previous High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, Kay Marriott, who recalled her experiences in the role detailing some of her personal favourites and highlights.
It was then the turn of the incumbent High Sheriff Dawn Haig-Thomas who set about explainng what she would like to focus on during her tenure, with particular importance placed on literacy levels and helping young people across the Island improve their reading and writing skills.
Having previously served as vice chair of the board for UKSA and as a school governor, this is a cause close to her heart and something she is keen to put into action as soon as possible, with Dawn to visit and read to Year 2 students of Queensgate Primary School in East Cowes every Tuesday.
A new Under Sheriff was appointed in April Newton from Newport, who will advise and assist the High Sheriff when is necessary.
All documents and legalities were formalised before the High Sheriff left the room through a guard of honour formed by local Police Cadets.
High Sheriff Dawn Haig-Thomas – who has lived on the Island since 2012 – said:
“I am truly honoured to be taking office and I hope I can bring about positive change in the community.”
Dawn Haig-Thomas will serve in the role for 1 year until a new High Sheriff is appointed next April.

Only previous High Sheriffs can nominate a future High Sheriff. Very closed book.
Since 2012? So she gets the job because of what? There’s plenty of genuine islanders who contribute so much to the island. Another brown envelope function.

Her appointment perpetuates an old tired system of subjugating the people. It’s nothing more than old fashioned, out of date and out of touch theatre. Her role is meaningless to most of us. Absolutely pointless rubbish.
