An East Cowes man has been banned from driving for 2 years after failing to provide a specimen when suspected of an offence following a rush hour collision in Ryde.
John Benjamin, 54, of Chinchen Close, appeared before Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 24th July, where he pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
The charge relates to an incident on 12th June this year when police were called to Great Preston Road, Ryde, following a collision between an Audi A1 and a green Peugeot 206, which Benjamin had been driving.
The road was closed between Harding Road and Gassiot Green while emergency services attended. No injuries were reported.
Benjamin, who until this incident had been working as a takeaway delivery driver, was required to provide a blood or urine sample during the investigation but failed to do so without reasonable excuse.
Magistrates imposed a 24-month driving disqualification, fined him £200, and ordered him to pay £85 costs plus a £96 victim surcharge. The fine will be deducted from his benefits in monthly instalments.
The court also heard that Benjamin failed to surrender to custody at Newport Magistrates’ Court on 15th July 2025. For this offence, he received an additional £40 fine.

good work.
So we paid his fine then.
