A section of pavement has been closed off in Ryde Town Centre after brickwork above a window became loose.
Situated above a window on the 2nd floor of the Nationwide Building Society on St Thomas’ Square in the Town Centre, the brickwork has started to crumble, leaving the frame balancing precariously above the street.
Concern for the state of the building was raised to the Isle of Wight Council by a concerned member of the public yesterday (Thursday).
In just a few hours Island Roads had come along and erected a safety barrier below the window, closing the footway.
It is unsure when the stonemasonry will be repaired.

The owner fix it instead of letting others deal with it. Hope island roads are sending them the bill.
How? By waving a magic wand? Dealing with these sorts of issues takes time, money and specialist skills. Unfortunately its not a quick fix.
But the owners must have bern aware there was an accident waiting to happen? It doesn’t suddenly deteriorate to that extent it must have been ongoing for a while!.
No and the landlord should have dealt with this a long time before it got so bad
Considering they are funded by taxpayers, that’s all I’d expect them to do. Or make it safe and bill the owner.
Can we get Jarman and all of the council power grabbers to stand underneath in case any big lumps of masonry fall.
