A cyclist has been taken to hospital after they were struck by a van in a hit and run in Newport this morning (Tuesday).
Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were called to the scene at Manor Crescent on Pan Estate at 07:54, after reports of an incident involving a cyclist and a vehicle.
Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed that the van involved did not stop at the scene after it collided with the bicycle.
The cyclist involved has been taken to St Mary’s hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
The incident is being investigated.

There’s a lot of cyclist riding into cars theses days…
Truth hurts doesn’t it.
These cyclists should have insurance to cover for the damage they do to motor vehicles when they cycle into them!
Trouble on pan Estate people use furlongs has a rat run to avoid the traffic at the bottom of staplers and coppins Bridge roundabout it’s supposed to be a 20 mile limit down through there but they don’t hang about it can be dangerous for the kids because of the school being there as well
Yes, not enough police. It’s anarchy on the roads these days.
What, is it a school for the blind or something? LMAO
You have better traffic calming on Pan Estate than the rest of the island so they can’t save a lot of time by driving through!
It was Manor Crescent, not Furlongs. So it’s not a rat run, or acut through. Who ever was driving that van. Was either picking up or dropping off in the road, or they live in the road. So no need for so called speeding.
This morning driving down staplers I was driving at 28mph a cyclist was pulling away from.me he was doing over 30mph it’s not only cars who break speed limits
There’s no speed limit for cyclists.
no, but common sense is issued to all whether its the lycra brigade or motorists.
If they are using the road then they have to obey the rules on that road ie. speed limit.
Maybe you should do some basic research before posting?
Bicycles are not required to have speedometers and are therefore, not subject to speed limits. That is a fact.
Whether they should be required to obey speed limits is another issue, but currently they don’t.
Well they should, if using the road and Highway code, which of course they must have read seeing the way they hog the roads now and don’t give way now and again to let cars pass, anything that moves at speed on any road should adhere to speed limits, common sense , oh wait no common sense doesn’t exist in our vocabulary and day and age .
Judging by the down votes you should know that facts are not your friend on this site.
No. The rules of the road as you call them differ between modes of transport. There is no speed limit for cyclists. If you argue that there is please provide the legislation.
The speed limit is for ALL vehicles…
Yes there is..
No, there absolutely isn’t.
The only law that applies to a cyclist is “wanton and furious cycling”, which is broadly equivalent to dangerous driving.
A cyclist cannot be prosecuted for speeding alone. It has to be proven that they were cycling dangerously and that usually requires them to injure a 3rd party.
The last time a cyclist was prosecuted for anything was 14 years ago when a cyclist killed a pedestrian after mounting the pavement to avoid a red light.
Not saying it’s right, but it is the way the law works with regard to cyclists.
No. A youth was jailed for hitting & killing a pedestrian in London a couple of years back. He was on a fixed wheel bike riding too fast & couldn’t brake
Go on then what is it and which piece of legislation or part of the Highway Code is relevant?
Yes there are, it’s just the road traffic act does not deal with it adequately.
Very quick Google search will answer this
“Speed limits are designed for motor vehicles. Rule 124 of the Highway Code sets limits for various vehicles, which MUST be complied with. Bicycles are not included. While you can’t normally be charged for speeding on a bicycle you could, in extreme cases, be charged with careless cycling (maximum fine £1,000) or dangerous cycling (max fine £2,500). Furthermore, local bye-laws can impose limits on cyclists. Bournemouth’s promenade, for example, has a speed limit of 10mph (and on some days bikes aren’t allowed there at all).
Thanks for posting the facts, however some people seem to find facts annoying : ) there’s none so blind as those who will not see
I think if cyclists use the road they should be insured and abide by the road laws!!! The car drivers pay for the use of the road and have to be taxed moted insured so bikes should at least have insurance and abide by the road laws!!
This is the problem when cyclists have no laws to hold them to account, I find a lot of cyclists have an attitude and disrespect the Laws of the road…
We’ve already established that the’ laws of the road’ are not applicable to cyclists.
Stay off the road then!!!!!
Yes there is, same as all vehicles… . The speed limit is for all road users… a bicycle is a vehicle…or you too thick to know that.
You are, clearly, too thick read as it is printed in black and white in the Highway Code that speed limits don’t apply to bicycles.
Wishing the cyclist a speedy recovery.
Smoke weed every day
Got a feeling you have a few aliases. Same IP address…. Same home address.
Anyone want me to say?
Well then, there should be!
More idiots will be along soon…
why, are you going out
More bad driving on the IW
No idea whether the victim was a child, someone on their way to work, or an old person on the way to the shops.
Cyclist gets hit in a residential area and mouth-breathers instantly blame the cyclist and start their usual frothy-mouthed rants about “lycra louts”.
Pathetic.
Don’t you have some lycra to squeeze into as you go up Apse Heath at 5mph?
Does mummy know you are out?
yours does you DYEL
Would have thought they would have caught the van driver by now because there is CCTV outside of Pan stores just a little way from Manor Crescent should be fairly easy to see see the registration of any van going by any updates please
Hope the cyclist is OK however push bikes should not be on the roads they have no business being on the roads they have a cycle track use that they want to use the roads get a licence registration and insurance same as everyone else has to have to use the roads they can still cause damage to vehicles yet they have no insurance it’s prejudicial to motorists same with horses they have bridal paths what the hell are they doing on the roads around 2 ton metal boxes that travel at tens of miles an hour it’s idiotic and dangerous for motorists this is the 21st century after all not the dark ages.
Glad you hope the cyclist is OK, that is where our attentions should lie, however, we are indeed still in the dark ages, just read some of the vitriol posted here and on other cycling related articles… quite sad.
Not everyone has a cyclepath outside their house how do you think they get to the cycle paths
Cyclists not legally required to follow road speed limits? Thought I’d look the legal side up:
Road Traffic Act 1988 Section 36 (updated to 11 July 2022)
(1) Where a traffic sign….
has been legally placed on or near a road, a person driving or propelling a vehicle who fails to comply with the indication given by the sign is guilty of an offence.
I don’t cycle but for any driver complaining of the occasional cyclist cycling too fast. I’d challenge them to check their own speed more often!
Does The Speed Limit Apply To Cyclists? | Slater + Gordon
Try this. From actual lawyers.
This started out as a van hitting a cyclist, then driving off. Now it’s turned into let’s bash the cyclist, as it mu
It’s clearly not the cyclist who has left the scene of an accident. Why all the blame?
I’m disappointed nobody has complained about cyclists not paying road tax?
Hope it wasn’t the grey van from Sandown that didn’t have his hands on the steering wheel!
