A crash on a notorious crossroads on the outskirts of Newport has led to the closure of the main diversion route to Cowes this morning (Saturday), resulting in traffic chaos.
Police, fire and ambulance crews are all on scene at Forest Road, at the junction with Whitehouse Road.
It was just before 08:30 that emergency services were alerted to the crash.
It is currently unknown how many vehicles have been involved and the extent of any injuries sustained.
Forest Road has been closed by Police in both directions until further notice.
Due to the one-way closure of Horsebridge Hill and now the closure of the diversion route, all traffic heading into Cowes must travel via Middle Road to Calbourne, Elm Lane to Shalfleet and then the back roads through Porchfield to rejoin the diversion at Thorness.
Alternatively, travel to Cowes via the floating bridge from East Cowes.
Traffic heading out of Cowes towards Newport can continue to do so as normal.
UPDATE @ 10:12 – 1 person has been taken to hospital for further assessment.
Recovery of the 2 vehicles involved is underway, with Forest Road set to reopen shortly.

Well, we said all this last time.
The idea that this would occur must have been considered?
But if we now consider the ONLY way to get an hgv to Cowes is via Calbourne and Porchfield, how come the Toads haven’t closed that road off for safety as they have done with Firestone Copse?
With all the roadworks should run a round the island
Ferry service.
Build new piers and run Uber Boats around the island
Lol
How many serious accidents or God forbid fatalities on this notorious Black Spot need to occur before they put install traffic lights !!
Road safety on the island in non existent!
They should’ve put 4-way lights there whilst the diversion is in place.
More bad driving on the Iow
Not jumping to conclusions, but since this was on a notoriously dangerous road with national speed limit in place or at least 50mph the council etc really do need to review the speed limit for most now the island. Back before 2000 xard were not as powerful etc as now and there wrent as many accidents. Yes I admit it’s not all about speed that causes accidents but on the whole it is especially on roads lanes with national speed limit.
Digressing slightly, Alverstone rd has a 30 in place heading towards winford but national speed limit heading out into open country right on the section where there are houses and people go for walks etc. I’m surprised no fatalities have occurred on this or other similar rds. Better to sort now than wait for the coroner to tell you to do so after a major incident surely.
Problem is not many people in IOW follow any speed limits regardless. Then you add the tourists it just creates more problems.
Speeding is rife on the island until the useless island
authorities address the speeding issue, accidents will
keep happening.
“Jersy have a speed limit of 40mph”
What limit does the Isle of Wight have.

Why doesn’t the Council DO something? Inefficient, apathetic, unconcerned, overpaid.
Whitehouse is only 1 example of black spots on various Island Roads which have been known for decades, with exponential crash risk increases year on year, correlating to numbers and sizes of vehicles. Simples. Do the sums people! “They” will not spend a penny on anything now they are in huge deficit.
And yes. Yes…YES..to all those who ask for a speed limit here. Please. That would cost nothing except drivers’ time & a couple of enforcement officers. And would certainly, definitely save lives. Stop talking about it.
Just DO it!!
