To mark the first anniversary of the sad death of well-known Isle of Wight cricketer Ian Heal, at the age of just 50, his club Carisbrooke High School Old Boys are staging a charity cricket tournament later this month.
During the last 10 days of his life, Ian received incredible care from Mountbatten’s Isle of Wight hospice.
As a thank you to them and in memory of Ian, who captained the Carisbrooke Old Boys team for 32 years, the Old Boys and Ian’s family are organising the charity tournament at Porchfield Cricket Club on Sunday 25th May, from 09:30 until dark.
Ian was also well known on the Island as a solicitor and a former president and committee member of Ryde and District Round Table. He was a governor at Newchurch Primary School and a keen Tottenham Hotspur fan.
The testimonial tournament will take place with teams made up of former colleagues, family and friends, coming together to celebrate Ian’s life and his love for cricket. Alongside the cricket there will be an all-day BBQ, bar and cake sale.
A spokesperson for the club said:
“We want to raise as much money as possible for Mountbatten to help others receive the same amazing care that Ian and his family did.
“We have an array of amazing donations from Island businesses and further afield.
“Prizes/auction lots include: handmade bespoke jewellery, original art work and merchandise, food and drink, pub/restaurant vouchers, ferry tickets, overnight stays, shopping vouchers, spa pass, massages, family attraction passes, days out/activities and much more.
“Raffle tickets can be purchased on the day or if you can’t make it and would like to buy some please message any of Ian’s family or the Old Boys team. If you want to donate a prize for the raffle please get in touch.
“If we can raise £10,000, Ian’s widow, Faye, has promised to brave the shave.
“Several of us are walking the Wight this year to get the fundraising started. Please see our justgiving page if you are able to donate.
“Please do come along and join the fun, help us to celebrate Ian’s life and raise some money for our amazing Island hospice.”
