Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue crews have been mobilised to a fire in the open on the outskirts of Newport this morning (Tuesday).
Appliances from Newport and a water carrier from Freshwater are on scene off Yarmouth Road, near to Vittlefields crossroads.
The incident, which began at around 09:30, is thought to be under control.
It comes following weeks of almost no rainfall resulting in tinder-dry conditions across the Island.
UPDATE @ 10:31 – The fire has been extinguished and crews have now stood down from the incident.
If you see a fire in the countryside, contact the fire service immediately on 999. Do not attempt to tackle fires that cannot be put out with a bucket of water.
Remember, do not discard cigarettes or other smoking materials in the countryside. It is also important to clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Always take extra care if using a barbecue and only light fires or BBQs in designated areas. Never leave a campfire or BBQ unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.

Fire engine. ‘Appliance’ is an Americanism.
Fire Engine is for Children , Fire Appliance for Adults .
But surely it applies?
30+ years in the service we always called them appliances and they are parked in an appliance bay when on station. Truck is an ‘Americanism’.
I thought you was a girl….what with a name like “isla”.
It only takes a cigarette butt to be thrown out of a window due to the dryness of the land. They should bring back a deposit charge on glass bottles then people may return them from where the purchased the items – like they used to do with Whites and Corona. As for disposable BBQ’s they should be banned from shops. Burnt food is very carcinogenic and how many times have you seen burnt food on a BBQ?
So your point is only disposable bbq’s should be banned because they burn food? Surely if your point is about carcinogens then you would call for ALL bbq’s to be banned, which frankly is equally ridiculous.
Careless people should be banned.
Careless comments should be banned also but hey its island life i suppose.
Six more weeks of it yet
