Motorists and local buses are on diversion following a road traffic collision on Middle Road between Carisbrooke and Calbourne this morning (Sunday).
The incident is reported to have occurred at the junction with Betty Haunt Lane – near The Blacksmiths.
The road is closed in both directions as emergency services deal with the incident.
Southern Vectis Route 7 buses via Newbridge are diverting via Elm Lane, Shalfleet and Gunville in both directions.
UPDATE @ 13:56 – The road has now reopened and Route 7 buses have returned to their normal route.
UPDATE @ 17:50 – A 23-year-old man from London, driving a Honda Civic, sustained arm and back injuries in the crash.
The 52-year-old Devon driver of the other vehicle involved, a Range Rover Evoque, escaped injury.

Cause? Driving too fast? Probably. As usual. Getting very boring. People just don’t learn.
Slow down and arrive at your destination accident free. It’s really not that difficult.
Or please look before you pull out in front of an coming vehical, then insist on driving at a snail’s pace just to further inconvenience the following driver? Fed up with it.
Idiots drive on main roads like they are motorways. Yet here many of these long roads where fools speed have many small side roads, dips and ridges where an oncoming cars can be briefly hidden and overgrown verges hedges etc
Add to that long term drivers used to less frenetic unnecessary speeding cars driving to their perceived safe maximum speed and a accident waiting to happen on most roads
We only here of the ones that occur.
Imagine the myriad of near misses daily!

Whilst we don’t know the actual details of the reason for this incident, an old boss of mine once said to me, when I apologised for arriving late at work ‘better to arrive five minutes late than not at all’!

These byways were made for the occasional car and farm vehicles. Hence narrow winding and now when adjoining roads where chavs speed, not because of being late but for fun then such will never get better only worse as more cars and more chavs fill this once lovely place
More street furniture then, just because the idiots can’t read the road….
Visibility in both directions is hopeless. Should be a perpendicular Tee, although that would mean reducing the gradient on BH Lane – ie it would cost money so no chance.
Hazards are on all road’s, that’s why idiots always get into trouble…..they can’t read the road and can’t think ahead….

There are many reasons why the Middle Road is dangerous , its not all down to bad driving
Rubbish, if that was the case we would all crash!!!
Driving way too fast on bends and dips. It doesnt matter how much careful you come out from the side road if the car on the main road is driving too fast it will be too late to stop.
Both ends of that lane are national speed limit roads, and regardless of those that constantly complain about speed, legally you are allowed to do this if you are confident and competent to do so.
However, everyday road users pull out on to many of the junction like this and proceed to accelerate like they are the only road user on the carriageway. They do not use thier mirrors or consider what may happen based on the way they are driving.
I’m not saying that this is the case here but it happens on a daily basis on my commute to work.
So many recent arrivals on the island, larger cars, people unused to driving on single carrageqay roads and complete lack of awareness all contribute to the daily reports of accidents.
Unfortunately, wrong. Speed limits are the maximum speed you are allowed to go, if it is safe. i.e. a straight-ish road, no dips, bends, blind corners, hidden junctions, etc. There are many roads on the island that are subject to the 60 mph limit but that does not mean it is safe to go at that speed. In many cases it definitely is not and you could be prosecuted for dangerous driving if you did. Thinking that you are allowed to drive at 60 based on your own judgement of competence is just plain wrong and, where the road conditions dictate a slower speed, shows a lack of competence to drive. Sadly, this attitude is to blame for a lot of accidents. IOW roads are for the most part just country lanes.
I’m sorry, but if you cannot go round a corner without having to slow based on the assumption there may or may not be an alien landing or other obstruction in the road then you should take the bus.
If you showed an abundance of caution to every perceived or potential hazard then the roads would never move. Driving like an ass is very different that driving in accordance with the law.
However, you have decided that what I wrote is based on how I drive ? I’ve not said that’s how I would drive either of those roads, however that is what is ‘allowed’.
Whether you decide to or not, based on driving condition is a personal choice.
Fair enough, you don’t drive stupidly, but the argument remains that you are not ‘allowed’ to drive to the speed limit if conditions dictate otherwise. My approach is to try to be sure I can stop within the distance I can see to be clear, not gamble (though using a car on the island is becoming more and more of a gamble each day), be aware of what’s around you and anticipate. Too many bikes, tractors and people on the wrong side of the road these days. It’s worked all over the world for fifty accident-free years. I don’t drive excessively slowly and I often get from A to B faster than those who have to keep slamming on their brakes because they’re going too fast and over-compensate.
Controversial I know ! But hows about a maximum speed limit of 40mph for the island, emergency vehicles not included. Heavily policed for first year. Why do cars etc have to travel at 60mph on the island ?? Where’s everyone going in such a hurry?
Argument aside that it already basically is judging most days out there, it’s completely unnecessary or enforceable.
I wouldn’t say the speed limits generally speaking are incorrect or ‘too fast’, I’d say the standard of driving and general thought and consideration are shockingly poor.
I’ve been saying that for a long time. There should be a blanket speed limit for the Island.
