UPDATED: Bembridge RNLI lifeboat, Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and the Coastguard Rescue helicopter were all involved in the urgent rescue of a seriously unwell man off the coast of the Isle of Wight this morning (Monday).
At around 05:50 the Coastguard were notified that a crewman had possibly suffered a stroke onboard the vessel ‘Ievoli Cobalt’ in St Helens Roads, just 1.5 nautical miles off the East Coast of the Island.
Bembridge’s All Weather Lifeboat ‘Alfred Albert Williams’ was immediately launched and once on scene transferred 2 crew members to the offshore supply ship. After the lifeboat crew’s initial assessment, CPR was carried out on the casualty.
Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter based at Lee on Solent was scrambled to the scene and Coastguard Rescue Teams from Ventnor and Southampton were readied at the helipads at St Mary’s Hospital and Southampton General Hospital.
The casualty was evacuated by the helicopter and flown to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
UPDATE TUESDAY – It has been confirmed by Police that the crewman has died, despite the best efforts of rescue teams.
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary have been transferred to the Ievoli Cobalt to carry out their investigations, however it is said there are no suspicious circumstances.
