More than half of Island households will be under food or energy stress this winter, according to an Isle of Wight Labour councillor.
Councillor Richard Quigley is urging the Isle of Wight Council to declare a Cost of Living Emergency as, he says, it is expected that 54% of local households will be in food and or energy stress by the winter.
He has submitted a motion calling for the authority to help by taking a co-ordinated approach to addressing the emergency, also providing resources where possible.
He is also asking for the council to:
- Set up a dedicated officer working group to address the issues
- Call on Parliament to ensure a right to food is written into law
- Free up money to target help through community groups and make it easier for groups to access any funding
- Ensure all council decisions do not disproportionately impact residents who are struggling the most by considering the socio-economic impact in our assessment of actions we need to take
- Champion a real living wage for all workers
- Commit all 39 councillors to work together on the cost of living emergency for the benefit of the Island and its residents.

Councillor Michael Lilley, in a motion he has submitted, is asking the council to officially declare the emergency and resolve to put in place a clear package of support and help for Island residents. He wants the council to work in collaboration with all stakeholders, including town, community and parish councils and the voluntary sector at grass-root levels.
The motions will be discussed and voted on at the full council’s meeting on Wednesday (5th October).

Call on Parliament to ensure a right to food is written into lawreally quigley – how about you ensure that it only goes to those that actually make an effort to work, earn some money and pay for their own food.
I am not paying extra tax so some freeloader can get food at my expense
But you are!

link to the source of the 54% figure and the associated study documentation that proves all c.142k islanders were asked, to reach the result of 54%
perhaps quigley could champion the cause to get freeloaders off their backsides and support theirselves instead of taxing workers more.
Let’s hope that they don’t decide to do as suggested and bring the Parish and town Councils into this consultation.
For if they include Seaview and Bembridge Parish Councils, then they will think anyone owning a car over three years old on the driveway or not having at least two holidays abroad each year must be in dire poverty.
Although more likely they will feel the poor are getting what they deserve. For most of these retired too early, so bored busy bodies are seemingly hard, cold and uncaring for anyone other than those in their own little circle.
“Let them eat cake”, provided it’s over its sell by date springs to mind.
Exactly well needed, not hike in council tax to pay over inflated wages for agency workers, managers and CEO of IWC. Get rid of that large fleet of cars parked up at County Hall.
Like the council are worried about us,longs council taxes are paid and they get there pay rises
Never vote Tory is the answer.
How can you sheep believe this is the conservatives fault? Read it. It’s clearly labour!
That would be the Labour Party that hasn’t been in power for 12 years and has never had any power on the Isle of Wight, would it?
Their fault?
Please explain how.
Clearly its Blair and Brown fault. They created the tax credit generation, always want something for nothing.
Everything that is ROTTEN in this country is due to the lying Labour Party.
They have been LYING since the 27th February 1900.
But Liebour love Russia.
Labour “love” a regime that is, essentially, a kleptocracy which goes against every single principle of socialism? You are, as they say, having a laugh.
There is, however, plenty of evidence of Russian involvement in the Tory party, and they certainly interfered in the Brexit campaign, particularly regarding Farage with his regular spot on Russian State Television (Russia Today) and strong rumours of up to £550,000 in payments from them.
Labour Council in Liverpool haven’t got a good record for being corrupt have they. You have a short memory about Blair on purpose I suppose.
I don’t know if you have noticed, but we don’t live in Liverpool.
Who ever can trust a Wight Liebour Councillor. No one has asked me if I “WILL BE UNDER FOOD OR ENERGY STRESS’ so where did he get 54% from. Perhaps Liebour should cut their love for Putin, then they can blame him not the government.
the statistic is inaccurate – as I wasn’t asked either. Just more politicians talking their own book again.
Don’t worry, the levelling up policy of Bobs mates will protect us.
