Commitment to a national training programme has resulted in the Isle of Wight Council achieving Bronze status as a Carbon Literate Organisation.
The accreditation – awarded by the Carbon Literacy Trust – is internationally recognised and shows the council is prioritising action to tackle the climate crisis.
Carbon literacy is defined as ‘an awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis’.
In 2021, the council approved its Mission Zero Climate and Environment Strategy 2021-2040, aiming to be carbon neutral within its own operations by 2030. Carbon literacy training forms part of the council’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions, by educating staff on how they can make changes in their day-to-day work.
The council has plans to roll the training out to much more staff in the next few years to increase awareness of the issues and challenges and the action which is needed.
Councillor Jonathan Bacon, Cabinet member for climate change and environment, said:
“This accreditation as a carbon literate organisation is a visible ‘badge’ that shows we are both committed to tackling climate change, and serious about establishing and maintaining a low carbon culture.
“One of the aims of our Mission Zero strategy, published last year, was to mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing carbon emissions and we’ve set an ambitious target for the council to be carbon neutral by 2030 and the Island community by 2040.
“This accreditation and training will help us to achieve this by ensuring all of our services have an understanding of their carbon footprint, and what is needed to do to reduce it.

How can you awarded a bronze
award for carbon neutral ????
Air conditioning poses problems due to the fact , many use refrigerants that Are powerful in heat trapping chemicals, eg chemicals like hydrofluroid carbons , up to 12-000 more carbons…..
So why have they wasted all our money on air con in Council office?????
Also disposal of electric car batteries is detrimental to the environment ……
Please let us mere cash paying cow’s know you’re answers !
The aircon is for their computer system. it isnt for the offices whatsoever
if it was for the offices i could understand, but this simply isnt the case at all
If they had stopped building on a world heritage biosphere site, who knows, the ship of fools may even have won a gold.
Of course this means your council tax will now be cheaper, you will be getting all the services back that they have stopped providing over the last 10 years, they will be making major improvements to island infrastructure to encourage more tourism, cleaning beaches, providing facilities and hosting outdoor events for everyone (not just minority pressure groups) and they’ll be reinstating parking in many areas to make residents lives actually better – oh no sorry, a bronze award from another taxpayer funded gravy train means they no longer have to do any of these things cos ‘climate change’
BRONZE CARBON LITERATE ORGANISATION ACCREDITATION – who comes up with these crap terms ?. Only reason IWC can reduce carbon footprint is to steal money from Council Tax payers to buy ev vehicles etc which then prevents me from going carbon neutral cause can’t afford .How is it right to legally steal our money to make themselves look good. I am paying over £2700 a year, no street light,no kids at school, crap road and dust cart that comes every 2 weeks, I even have to sort rubbish and drag to end of drive, soon be having to empty in dust cart myself when goes automated!.
Carbon neutral? the fantasy of the stupid. You really couldnt make up this rubbish, how is Bacon and the other clowns going to stop all the huge ships passing the island polluting? remember, each one is emitting as much as 50 million vehicles per year, get into the real world.
