Islanders considering a career in care or health are being invited to a special careers event in Newport later this month.
The Isle of Wight Council will host a Spring Care and Health Careers Festival on Wednesday 27th May, following the success of its annual autumn event.
The festival will take place at Lord Louis Library in Newport, from 10:00 to 14:00, bringing together more than 20 local employers, organisations and support services.
New organisations joining the event include Island Jobs, which will be offering advice on applications and job searching, and the Lighthouse Clinic, promoting careers and vacancies in the health sector.
Council organisers said the additional spring date was added in response to demand from employers keen for another chance to meet potential recruits. The autumn festival is still expected to go ahead as usual later this year.
The timing has also been chosen to make it easier for people to attend, with the event falling during school half term and ahead of the busy summer hospitality season.
Visitors can drop in throughout the day to speak directly with care providers, health services, training partners and community organisations, and to learn about the range of roles available across the sector.
These include frontline caring and nursing posts, as well as jobs in administration, estates, maintenance and support services.
The event is open to anyone interested in finding out more, including school leavers, people returning to work, those thinking a career change, or anyone wanting to explore local opportunities.
There will also be opportunities to ask questions about qualifications, training and development, and to better understand how local care and health services work together to support Island communities.
The council will be showcasing its own roles on the day, including careers within council-run care homes and reablement services.
Martin Garbett, service manager and Nominated Individual at the council, said:
“Events like the Spring Health and Care Careers Festival are invaluable in showcasing the incredible breadth of opportunities within our sector and our council.
“They help us connect with people who may never have considered a career in care, and our service has directly benefitted from past festivals through increased interest, stronger recruitment and the chance to highlight the vital work our teams do every day.”
Emily Pratt, from the council’s recruitment team, added:
“This event is such a great way for individuals of all working backgrounds to come along and explore whether there is a career for them in the care and health sector.
“There are so many different types of careers available, from caring and nursing roles to posts in administration and maintenance. The sector suits a wide range of transferable skills, so it’s well worth coming along to see what might be right for you.”
