Police and paramedics are attending to a woman who has been knocked off her moped by an artic lorry on Coppins Bridge in Newport this afternoon (Tuesday).
The incident, which has seen the motorcycle become wedged under the front of the lorry’s cab, has occurred on the Island’s busiest junction between East Street and High Street.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has mobilised a paramedic crew and an operational commander to the scene.
Traffic is reported to be gridlocked in the area with road closures being implemented by Police. Motorists are being diverted via South Street and St George’s Way/Church Litten and through Newport town. Police are advising that motorists avoid the area, if possible.
Southern Vectis say their Routes 5, 8 and 9 are diverting locally and will likely be delayed.
UPDATE @ 16:25 – Island Echo is told that the female casualty has sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries. She is to be taken to St Mary’s Hospital for further assessment and treatment.
There has been no indication from Police as to when the road is likely to re-open.
UPDATE @ 16:37 – Emergency services have worked swiftly to clear the incident and with confirmation of the casualty’s injuries, the decision has been taken to re-open the road.
The lorry has been moved and traffic is once again able to use Coppins Bridge gyratory as normal.
The motorcyclist has been blue lighted to nearby St Mary’s Hospital.
Traffic remains heavy in the area.
How awful, wishing the lady a speedy recovery.
Wasn’t there a similar accident with a huge lorry coming around that corner a few years ago and hit the kerb? Maybe an issue with the corner and not so much driver error but thats just one opinion. Hope she recovers
Hope the lady motorcyclist will be okay and have a speedy recovery
Expect more sadly as electic bikes are pottering about in semi darkness and wet windscreens and misty windows.
Fear not the elite will whizz past in top end cars whilst pushing the plebs onto dangerous cheap transport.
Hope she is well and the lorry driver who may not be at fault.
From one biker to another, all the best and hope you make an excellent recovery.
Best wishes to the lady on the moped.
what about the driver of the lorry – perhaps it was not his fault, perhaps her bike riding wasn’t in accordance with the expected standards or the road signage. Hopefully she recovers and is ok though.
Saw her Filtering through traffic. Lorry driver didn’t see her!
That is very charitable of you iow’ter.
“Hopefully she recovers and is ok though”. I bet that, that cheered her up.
For their own safety, all two wheelers (and fours as well) should treat these big lorries as if they had Covid.
