The Isle of Wight Council’s controversial draft Island Planning Strategy (DIPS) will come before councillors yet again as a decision on its future is hoped to be made.
Last month, an extraordinary meeting of the full council was called to decide whether or not to approve the DIPS — which would set the council’s housing targets for the next 15 years among other policies.
After a 3-hour meeting – the longest the meeting could go on for – no decision was made as sparks flew and opposing sides clashed.
Overall, a motion to send the plan out to a 6-week consultation before sending it to the government’s Planning Inspectorate for scrutiny was rejected by 18 votes to 16.
A 2nd motion was tabled by Councillor Chris Jarman, to send the DIPS back for consideration and recalculate the housing figures using data published in 2021, instead of those currently included in the plan which date back to 2014. Time ran out before the motion could be voted on so no final decision was made.
Councillors will now continue the debate at the full council meeting at County Hall this evening, where the motion will be heard again.
On the meeting agenda, officers are asking councillors to outline the objections they have to the DIPS which will then be sent back to the council’s cabinet executive for discussion.
Again, the meeting will only be able to run for 3 hours.
You can follow the meeting along online from 18:00 at www.iow.moderngov.co.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=172&MId=1406, or attend in person at County Hall.

….
should be zero houses, as the existing hospital, dentists, roads, sewage system as well as other infrastructure cannot cope with what we have already.
unless they are going to make the isle of wight bigger, then it is already full, with no more infrastructure capacity for additional people turning up here, expecting free housing.
Another 3hrs in Kindergarten !!!!!
Ooh no that’s an insult to the children ….
With the amount of building going on hardly seems worth having 2 Mps ….The island will be 1 big blob !!!!
Concrete jungle jigsaw.
Still let’s hope they actually get it sorted instead of a cat fight ???????
My money’s on the latter !!!!!!!
Perhaps they should table follow up meetings for everyday until they can agree on something before planning department look at it for a few months.
Who remembers the island when it was based on tourism, now all council care about is houses and supermarkets
