Traffic disruption for those heading in and out of Ryde is set to continue until the end of this week at the earliest as Southern Water contractors continue the repair works to a blocked sewer.
The traffic chaos comes as a result of the closure of Queens Road in both directions on the evening of the 11th August, and it has now been confirmed by Island Roads that the closure of the A-road in both directions will be until late this week or early next week.
The road is meant to be under a one-way system for a period of 10 weeks to allow repairs to a collapsed wall. For the past couple of weeks traffic has been able to enter Ryde via Queens Road, but with a diversion in place for outbound traffic.
On most days since the closure was enforced traffic can be seen backed up from the Green Street/West Street junction all the way up to the top of Binstead Hill.
One concerned resident believes that Island Roads need to adjust the traffic lights, allowing them to stay green for longer, in the hope to ease congestion in the area.
As a result of the blockage and the works to rectify it, approximately 17 properties in the surrounding area are having to manually pump their sewage away.

Island residents have suffered massive delays from IR and net company, over last few years.
More congestion and extra pollution. Nothing will change, swept away like concrete down the drain.
Adjusting the traffic lights to allow for different traffic flow / rates is far to difficult for IR to handle. Same as putting the right number of operatives into any one project, and working 24/7, is impossible for IR. Who is responsible for these people? Bet that have been promoted and got fantastic salary increase.
Cars have been demonised so that in the not too distant, only the top people will own such, and all the time life is made harder and harder for the motorists so as to get the less needed to give up their cars, feeling the troubles and costs are no longer worth it.
All a slow but certain way of curtailing car ownership for the masses eventually.
They did the same with smokers, first warnings on packets, then ugly photos then hide them away, then raise prices, then ban smoking in various places etc etc.
People never assumed that would work, but for most it has. So it will be with private car ownership eventually
The chaos is not helped by the fact the lights at the binstead end of queens road are stopping diverted traffic and on Sunday the lights at the top of St Johns hill and high stret were only letting 4 vehicles through from Argyll street onto St Johns Hill.
There has been something wrong with the lights at the top of St John’s for some time. I have seen only 3 cars being let through?
Not helped by stop/start cars taking time to pull away.
And then some imbecile thought it was a good idea to dig up the esplanade in the height of the holiday season.
THE LUNATICS HAVE TAKEN OVER THE ASYLUM.
Is it full of lycra clad cyclists riding 3 abreast again?
i wonder what is the cause off a block or collapsed sewer
