A first time offender who stole 6 tubs of ice cream from the Co-op has been handed a conditional discharge.
Dean Rayner, 46, of Trafalgar Road in Newport, admitted a single charge of theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Friday).
Prosecuting, Nola Bond, told the court that on the 5th September, Rayner entered The Co-op on High Street in Sandown and placed 6 tubs of ice cream in his bag and left the store without paying.
The court heard how the goods were valued at around £34.86.
Defending Mr Rayner, Tom Cooke, said that his client had contacted the Crown Prosecution Service and The Co-op before his court appearance to admit his guilt, something seldom seen in the courts. He added that Rayner was stealing out of necessity having ‘messed up his money’.
Rayner was handed a 6-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs of £85, and compensation of £34.86.
