A monolith created by a local man and erected at Compton Beach earlier this month has sold on eBay, but it didn’t go for the £50,000+ price tag it once attracted.
Auction site staff stepped in to remove a number of ridiculous bids placed on the item, which has finally sold for a more realistic £810. A total of 16 people placed 53 bids.
It was a thing of beauty and shrouded in mystery when it first appeared on the beach at Compton, but the piece of art was vandalised and eventually dismantled. The monolith made international headlines after Island Echo first reported about the 10ft reflective object.
The remains of the structure were hauled up to Hanover Car Park for disposal before then being ‘purchased’ from the National Trust. It then appeared on eBay and by 16th December had hit a top bid of £50,800.
The monolith was created by 29-year-old Tom Dunford.
