The Isle of Wight Masters Open Swim Meet returns for its 25th year this weekend, attracting competitors from across the mainland and as far afield as Germany.
For a quarter of a century, the annual event has brought masters swimmers to the Island from the Home Counties and beyond, and this year is no exception.
More than 60 swimmers are due to compete at Medina Pools this Saturday (7th February), with an afternoon of racing set to feature renewed rivalries and strong competition.
Island interest will be led by Zac Lacey, GB Downs Team Captain, who will be racing alongside several of his team-mates. Visiting clubs will also be battling it out for The Heights Trophy, awarded to the top-performing team, currently held by Bracknell & Wokingham SC.
Masters swimmers compete in age groups ranging from 18–24 years and then in 5-year bands all the way up to 100+, allowing for regular and fair competition across the age ranges.
Racing gets under way at 13:45, with free entry for spectators.
Bob Cooper, Meet Referee, said:
*“This event is very well supported by mainland clubs and many people stay over for the weekend.
“It is encouraging to see swimmers of all ages racing each other and continues to prove the health benefits that swimming brings.”*
